update on reading

Just finished two more books. One was great! Dear Husband by Joyce Carol Oates. Short stories that are a little dark. I loved the book because she is such a good writer. I'd never read her before, and quite frankly her book jacket photo is a bit scary. But she is a great writer and inspired me to focus on those stories I said I would try and write this summer. Honestly, I like the memoir-type stuff better than fiction (when it comes to me writing) because my observations of small town life are just better off as truths than fiction. However, I need to work on the fiction part because of all the stories I know, some are better off not told (the true ones).

The other book? Red April by a Peruvian dude. It started slow and then became an intense killa-thrilla during Holy Week in a small Peruvian town. I think a certain artist I once dated would love this book. This was excellent fiction.

Company is coming in Thursday, I have an extra job this week with the cousins from France, my summer academy is ending with a flourish (will brag on that experience over at my other blog), and Family Camp is next week. My mind is boggled with all of it, but the good news is after Thursday I am officially NOT WORKING for two weeks. Entertaining, yes, but NOT WORKING. I need a break. My brain hurts, and my feet, too.

Joyce Carol Oates is my favorite writer! I love the undercurrent of violence in her books, and the way she writes about class issues in America, and her crazy, tortured heroines. Two of my favorites are Because It Is Bitter, and Because It Is My Heart and Black Water. She also has a great memoir about becoming a writer, and her journals are fascinating, too.

Isn't it great to be able to read for *pleasure* in the summer?
